Abstract

The working notes we offer readers below correspond to folders 16/5/1, entitled “Society and its forms,” and 16/5/2, a more extensive folder entitled “Animal and human societies.” Both are part of the working materials Ortega prepared and used for his great mature work, Man and people.

Author Biographies

Marcos Alonso Fernández, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Professor of Ethics, Bioethics, and History of Science at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid, having previously served as a professor at universities in America and Spain. He holds a PhD in philosophy from the same university, and his research has focused on the thought of Ortega y Gasset, bioethics, applied ethics, the philosophy of technology, and philosophical anthropology. His most recent publications include the works “Brain-affecting technologies, personal identity, and authenticity” (2022), Ortega and technology (2021), and “Education, evaluation, and narrative: Reflections from Ortega y Gasset” (2021).

Iván Caja Hernández-Ranera, Centro de Estudios Orteguianos – Fundación Ortega-Marañón

Doctor of Philosophy from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is a member of the Ortega Studies Center at the Ortega-Marañón Foundation. His main lines of research focus on Ortega's thought and contemporary philosophy. He has participated in various conferences on the philosopher and has collaborated in editions of his works, his correspondence, and his working notes. Among his latest works are “The reception through Nietzsche of the meaning of hero in Ortega” (in press, 2023), “Analysis of the relationship between perspective and estimation in José Ortega y Gasset between 1914 and 1923” (2021), and “The estimative dimension of heroism in José Ortega y Gasset” (2020).
