Living in Circumstance, Existing in Freedom: Ortega and Kierkegaard

This article contrasts two ways of thinking about the concrete individual. Ortega proposes that individual life constitutes the radical reality from which all thought must depart, a life that is always situated, immersed in a world, thrown into an inescapable environment that it does not choose. Kierkegaard maintains that existence is defined by becoming, that dialectical movement between possibility and reality that only freedom in action can consummate. While Ortega thinks of the circumstantial self that must realize its life as a task in its environment, Kierkegaard affirms an existential decision that cannot be reduced to rational mediations. The article shows that both rescue the singular, though from different philosophical horizons.
