Abstract

The concept of “new philology” is little known in Ortega’s thinking. It is a concept that is forged in exile and that emphasizes the need to attend to the context of the author in order to understand what he really meant, because the act of speech encloses silences. Through the epistolary that Ortega crossed with the philologist Ernst Robert Curtius and writings such as “Apuntes para un comentario al Banquete de Platón” and the course El hombre y la gente, I will trace the characteristics of the “new philology” and the Theory of Saying that emanates from it. In order to make philosophy it is necessary to pay attention to the language in its status nascens: this is the essence of the new philology and the intention of this contribution consists in clarifying this sentence.
