Abstract

The Ortega y Gasset’s categories of minority and mass, particularly in España invertebrada, are mainly studied in works on the elitist sense of the author’s social and political philosophy. In this text, we intend to go beyond the usual analyses and underline the less pointed out formative value of the opposed human models of being excellent and being average. From our point of view, the spanish philosopher’s pedagogical concepts are rooted in the important stage of development of his thought during the 20’s of last century, which comprehension enables us to sustain a less common understanding of España invertebrada.

Author Biography

Margarita I. Almeida Almoedo, Universidad de Évora

Doctor of Philosophy, she is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Évora (Portugal). In her teaching, she has focused primarily on axiology, ethics, and the philosophy of education, researching the philosophical legacy of José Ortega y Gasset's work in the field of Hispanic thought. Her doctoral thesis, defended in 1998, was published under the title José Ortega y Gasset: A Aventura Filosófica da Educação (Lisbon: IN/CM, 2002). He has edited the books J. Ortega y Gasset – leituras críticas, no centenario da morte do autor (Évora: UÉ, 2007) and A vida como projecto: na senda de José Ortega y Gasset (Évora: UÉ, 2014). He has also translated Ortega's texts on Technology and the 1944 course on Historical Reason, which resulted in the books Meditação sobre a Técnica (Lisbon: Fim de Século, 2009) and Ortega y Gasset em Lisboa (Coimbra: IUC, 2017), respectively.
