Abstract

Between June 1918 and December 1925, José Ortega y Gasset was managing editor for CALPE (Compañía Anónima de Librería, Publicaciones y Ediciones), archetype of Spanish publishing in contemporary Spain’s Silver Age. This article sets forward his work as its head publisher: publishing plans, election of area managers, choice of works for publication and design of series, among them the basic Biblioteca de Ideas del Siglo XX. Also analyzed is Ortega’s relationship with authors and the launching of Revista de Occidente in America from CALPE’s branch in Argentina.

Author Biography

Juan Miguel Sánchez Vigil, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

Born in Madrid in 1956, he holds a Ph.D. in Information Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is an associate professor in the Department of Documentation at the School of Information Sciences of the same university and a documentalist at the Espasa-Calpe publishing house. Among his books, the following are worth mentioning: La Esfera. Ilustración Mundial (2003), El Universo de la Fotografía. Prensa, edición, documentación (1999), Alfonso. Imágenes de un siglo (2001) and Cómicos, trágicos y mitos. Photographs by Calvache (2000). He has also edited the Dictionary of Photography (2002) and the book Photography in Spain: From the Restoration to the Postwar Period (2001). Other shorter works include: “Index: A Project for the Electronic Retrieval of Information from the Contents of the Supplements to the Espasa Illustrated Universal Encyclopedia” (2004), “The Need for and Functions of the Editorial Documentation Center” (2004), “Press Photographic Archives” (2002), “Photography as a Document in the 21st Century” (2001), “Sources for the Study of Photographic Documentation” (1999), and “At the Forefront of Culture: Notes for a History of the Austral Collection” (1998).
