The First Centennial of the Magazine “Faro” (1908–1909): Origins, History, and Content

Abstract

This article analyzes the beginning and later development of the Faro review, which made an appearance one hundred years ago. Regarded as the first journalistic piece motivated by Ortega y Gasset, its pages appeared to be representative of the generation related with him, as well as other previous authors, united by a common intent of renewing the country. The young philosopher affirmed in there the necessity of a constitutional reform and a new liberalism of socialist direction. Nevertheless, part of the magazine’s capital came from maurista origins and the different vision of its members generated disagreements inside its political thought, which prompted Ortega to leave the review behind. Its temperate format and high cultural content did not allow for it to achieve popular success, for this reason concluded within its first year of life.
