“The great innovator of university education in the United States.” With these words José Ortega y Gasset referred to Robert Maynard Hutchins (1899-1977), who was president and chancellor of the University of Chicago between 1929 and 1951. As the Orteguian appellation indicates, Hutchins has earned a prestigious place in the history of American educational thought as the architect of one of the most advanced models of general education ever seen in the New Continent.Downloads
