Despite being constantly considered as the work of a “lonely bird”, as he did with the Velázquez’s painting, the aesthetic reflection of Ramon Gaya received numerous influences, including that of José Ortega y Gasset. This article explains this influence with special attention to the reading Gaya made of La deshumanización del arte and Papeles sobre Velázquez y Goya. The permanent criticism that the painter directed against the Spanish philosopher is relativized in the light of the many contact points that can be found among their respective writings about art.
