Abstract

This article exposes the problematic of the integration between life and reason in the formulation of “vital reason” as Ortega’s methodological project of overcoming so-called “idealism”. It analyzes, in terms of the concept of perspective, the relationship between the poles to be integrated by Ortega and whether Ortega identifies a distance between them. Then, we analyze how he undertakes this task of salvation in essays that develop the approach of El tema de nuestro tiempo, and, in this sense, the importance for Ortega of the estimative figuration, specified in what he understands as heroism, to give expression to a mediation between reason and life.

Author Biography

Iván Caja Hernández-Ranera, Centro de Estudios Orteguianos - Fundación Ortega-Marañón

D. in Philosophy from the Complutense University of Madrid. He is a member of the Center for Orteguian Studies of the Ortega-Marañón Foundation. His main lines of research focus on Ortega's thought and contemporary philosophy. He has collaborated on editions of the philosopher's works, his epistolary, and his working notes. Among his latest works are “La recepción a través de Nietzsche del significado de héroe en Ortega” (in press, 2023), “Análisis de la relación entre perspectiva y estimativa en José Ortega y Gasset entre 1914 y 1923” (2021), and “La dimensión estimativa de la heroicidad en José Ortega y Gasset” (2020).
