Abstract

In Ortega’s mature writings we find a rhetoric that rejects the generalization of formal Logic and defends the plurality of concrete logics, especially promoting the project of a philosophical informal logic, called Logic of the vital or historical reason. However, Granell’s Logic (1949) and Recasens’s New philosophy of the interpretation of the right (1956) developed Ortega’s rhetoric in a way that the Orteguismo was present in the first steps of the reception of the formal and informal Logic that led to their current institutionalization in Spain.

Author Biography

Gerardo Bolado Ochoa, Universidad de Cantabria

He holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Pontifical University of Salamanca, with a dissertation on Diego de Zúñiga and Spanish philosophy during the reign of Philip II. He conducted postdoctoral research on phenomenology under the supervision of Alfred Schopf at the University of Würzburg. A secondary school teacher and professor at the University of Cantabria, he has also taught at the National Distance Education University (UNED). A member of the governing board of the Royal Menéndez Pelayo Society, he is a regular contributor to the Seminar on the History of Spanish and Ibero-American Thought at the University of Salamanca. His main lines of research focus on the history of logic in Spain and the history of modern and contemporary Spanish philosophy. His major publications include *Argumentation in Public Discourse* (2011), “José Ortega y Gasset: An Introduction” (2009), “Ortega y Gasset and the Philosophy of Spanish Exile” (2009), “The Institutional Renewal of Philosophy in Spain after Ortega” (2005), and Transition and Reception: Spanish Philosophy in the Last Third of the 20th Century (2001).
