The Relationship Between Ortega and “Revista de Occidente” with “The Dial” (1924–1927)

Abstract

Thanks to mediation of writer Waldo Frank, in 1924 José Ortega y Gasset became the Spanish correspondent of the American cultural magazine The Dial. As a result of this, he published his first “Spanish Letter” in the October issue of that year and established a mutual collaboration between the American magazine and the Revista de Occidente, which he directed. This article analyses this double relationship in Ortega’s trajectory through the correspondence exchanged between the Spanish philosopher, his brother Manuel and Fernando Vela (administrator and secretary of the Revista de Occidente) and the editors of The Dial from 1924 to 1927.
