Abstract

Waldo Frank and José Ortega y Gasset met in Madrid in early 1924, during the stay of several months of the American to Spain. Between 1922 and 1923, the two writers had already established an epistolary correspondence, that would be extended in time, and had begun to forge a personal and professional relationship. In fact, a significant part of Frank s work was published, in its Spanish version, in the editorial of Revista de Occidente. The present work collects the correspondence between Frank and Ortega and the Revista from 1922 to 1930: sixteen documents that show the close bond between the two authors and the strong impact the Spanish culture had on the American, a starting point for the strong ties he later developed with Latin America. This correspondence demonstrates the important intellectual role of Ortega and Frank in the cultural networks between the Old and the New Continent.

Author Biography

Margarita Garbisu, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

She holds a PhD in Hispanic Philology and is a tenured professor at the Distance University of Madrid (UDIMA), where she is currently dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. She is part of the research team for the project on “Intellectual Networks in Europe and America through the Correspondence of José Ortega y Gasset,” sponsored by the Ortega-Marañón Foundation, and is the author of works on 20th-century literary and cultural magazines, such as the recent book The Criterion and Spanish Culture: Poetry, Music, and Criticism of the Silver Age in Interwar London (2017); “The relationship between Ortega and Revista de Occidente with The Dial (1924-1927)” (2015); and “The Criterion: its trajectory and its European link with Revista de Occidente” (2006). Furthermore, she has also published several articles in the field of comparative literature. Since 2009, he has also been a contributor to the journal Rinconete, published by the Centro Virtual Cervantes (Cervantes Institute).
