Author Biographies

Esmeralda Balaguer García, Universidad de Valencia

PhD candidate in the Contemporary Philosophical Thought doctoral program at the University of Valencia, Bachelor of Philosophy and Master's Degree in Secondary Education Teaching from the University of Valencia. Director of Nexofía, e-books from La Torre del Virrey, and member of the editorial board of La Torre del Virrey. Journal of Cultural Studies. Her research focuses, on the one hand, on philosophy, and in particular, on the philosophy and thought of Ortega y Gasset, and, on the other, on the philosophical experience of exile. Her publications include the article “An Approach to the Roman Concepts of ‘Concordia’ and ‘Libertas,’” published in the journal La Torre del Virrey. Journal of Cultural Studies, and “Masa” and “Gente”: Two Ortegaian Metaphors,” published in the Proceedings of the Third Congress on Aesthetics and Politics: Metaphors of the Multitude; and the essay “In Memoriam Odo Marquard," published in the journal La Torre del Virrey. Journal of Cultural Studies. He has also published a series of reviews in the same magazine, such as “Intellectuals and Reformists. The Generation of '14 in Spain and America,” edited by Francisco José Martín; “José Ortega y Gasset” by Jordi Gracia; “Guía Comares de Ortega y Gasset,” edited by Javier Zamora Bonilla; “Ortega, Renan, and the Idea of Nation” by Jorge Acevedo Guerra; and “Between Veneration and Oblivion. The Reception of Ortega y Gasset in Spain. I (1908-1936)” by Tzvi Medin.

Antonio Lastra

Doctor of Philosophy, professor of philosophy in secondary education, and external researcher at the Franklin Institute for Research in American Thought at the University of Alcalá. He chairs La Torre del Virrey. Institute for Advanced Cultural Studies and directs the School of Philosophy at the Ateneo de Valencia. His preferred fields of work are the ecology of culture, translation as lingua franca, American constitutional writing, the theological-political problem, English literature, and film studies. His latest book is Aprender leyendo (Learning by Reading) (Ápeiron Ediciones, Madrid, 2018).
