Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the intellectual relationship between José Ortega y Gasset and the philosophers of the Marburgian neo-Kantian school, referring to the unknown and unpublished correspondence found in Archivo de la Fundación José Ortega y Gasset- Gregorio Marañón in Madrid. We can divide this correspondence into two groups. The first group includes Ortega y Gasset’s letters with professors from Marburg: Hermann Cohen and Paul Natorp. The second group, in turn, is the list of the Spanish philosopher with other students from Philipps-Universität: Nicolai Hartmann, Heinz Heimsoeth, Ernst Cassirer about Paul Scheffer. Particularly noteworthy is correspondence with Hartmann, which we devote to the next part of the article. There are several reasons for this: first, Hartmann is the most influential representative of the Marburg school; secondly, he influenced the mature philosophy of Ortega y Gasset, especially his project to overcome the idealistic paradigm of modernity.

Dorota Leszczyna, Universidad de Wrocław

PhD in Philosophy, she is a professor at the Institute of Philosophy of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Wrocław, Poland. Her areas of research are modern philosophy, German philosophy, and Spanish philosophy. She has published, in Polish, José Ortegi y Gasseta.
