Abstract

A broader interest in the work of Ortega y Gasset has surged in Italy, especially since 1955, which led to a wider debate on the role of European cultural elites. Given the ample scope of the topic, this article will analyse the thinking of two of his most important readers of that time: Nicola Chiaromonte and Elémire Zolla. From the pages of the magazine Tempo Presente (1956), the first, and in the book Eclissi dell’intellettuale (1959), the second, both thinkers dialogue with Ortega to offer interesting reading keys on the crisis of intellectuals.
